When do I start brushing, and does my baby need toothpaste?

You want your baby’s mouth to be as clean and healthy as possible, so even before they get their first tooth, we recommend wiping their gums with a soft, damp cloth. But as soon as they get their first tooth, it’s a good idea to start a brushing routine.

Should You Use Toothpaste?

Yes, as soon as your child gets their first tooth, you can establish an oral health routine that includes the following:

  • Use an infant toothbrush with soft bristles.
  • Use a “rice-sized” smear of fluoride toothpaste until they can spit on their own. This is enough fluoride to remineralise their teeth, but they won't swallow too much toothpaste.
  • Gently brush both sides of your child’s teeth with circular motions.
  • Brush your child’s teeth twice a day.
  • When your child is old enough to spit on their own (typically around 18 months), increase the amount of toothpaste from a “rice-sized” smear to a “pea-sized” dollop. Use this amount until they are five years old.
