How do I know if I grind or clench my teeth at night?

Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, often happens during sleep, which means many people aren’t often aware it’s occurring. It can develop gradually, with subtle signs that are easy to overlook at first.

Common Signs of Bruxism

You may notice symptoms, such as:

  • Jaw soreness
  • Facial tension
  • Headaches, particularly around the temples
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Discomfort when chewing
  • Lockjaw
  • Neck pain

Over time, there may also be visible signs, such as flattened, chipped or worn teeth. In some cases, a partner may notice grinding sounds during the night, which can be an early indicator.

Why Treat Bruxism?

Ongoing clenching or grinding places repeated pressure on your teeth, muscles and jaw joints. Left unaddressed, it can contribute to tooth wear, strain in the jaw and changes in how your bite functions.

When to Receive a TMJ and Bruxism Assessment

If you notice any signs or you feel like something is 'off', a dental assessment can help identify patterns of grinding or clenching. At Radiance Dentistry, we assess your teeth, jaw and bite to understand what’s happening and discuss suitable options to support your comfort and oral health.

We invite you to book your consultation with Sydney TMJ dentist, Dr Dianne Proctor.

Our team looks forward to helping you achieve a more comfortable bite!
